Chinese freshwater aquaculture
Webspecies in Chinese aquaculture with the main point that the average trophic level has not changed very much since the mid-1980s. China is producing more higher trophic level fish, all from mariculture, but freshwater aquaculture is so dominant that its effect on overall trophic level is minimal. The major carp species used traditionally in Chinese aquaculture are the black, grass, silver and bighead carp. In the 1950s, the Pearl River Fishery Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences (CAFS) made a technological breakthrough in the induced breeding of these carp, induced by injecting fish pituitary hormones.
