WebJul 12, 2024 · Famous San Ildefonso potter and the woman responsible for the renaissance of Pueblo pottery, Maria Martinez, used seven different signatures at various points in her career. Many of our customers have expressed interest in knowing how the signatures relate to the time period in which a pot was made. WebThese early pottery were signed Marie & Santana and this signature continued from 1943 until 1956. Their cooperative efforts continued but, around 1956, the signature changed to Maria & Santana— an indication that Maria finally decided to use her real name Maria and not Marie that she had been using previously.

It was Popovi who helped market her work, building a shop at the pueblo and speaking about the pottery tradition of San Ildefonso at lectures across the country. WebSantana continued painting Maria’s pottery until 1956, when Maria Martinez began a partnership with her son, Popovi Da. Pottery made during this 1943 to 1956 period was signed Marie + Santana . In a later collaboration, their pottery was signed Maria + Santana . This change in signature facilitates dating their pottery wares within a decade.
