One could be to cash in on the main show's popularity by trying to get the fans to watch two shows rather than one. In a lot of cases ( Angel, Laverne & Shirley, Family Matters, A Different World) it worked. In some cases, like with the Gilmore Girls Jess spin-off that never even aired, it didn't.
